The Introduction

Berkeley, fall 2005

I stood at the corner of Durant and College waiting for the 51 bus when I spotted Steve Frances and his friend coming up the hill. I sincerely hoped that Steve wouldn’t notice me; sweaty and exhausted from the gym, I wasn’t in the mood to make small talk. My wish wasn’t granted — Steve stopped to chat and introduce me to his friend Dave. After a short, but friendly exchange, Steve and Dave continued their walk home.

Unbeknownst to me at the time, as they walked away, Steve remarked to Dave that he thought that Dave and I would really hit it off, and that I was quite the “party girl.” (Not true.) Dave wasn’t impressed with the designation, and Steve denies the comment to this day.

Although Dave and I were both dating people from back home and the interaction was unremarkable, the memory remains surprisingly fresh in our minds.

To be continued…
